Springer Nature Unveils New AI Use Framework for Researchers, Peer Reviewers and Editors
The policy shift arrives amid a broader industry response to the rapid rise of generative AI in scholarly work. On the same day, Oxford University Press released its own set of guidelines for authors using AI. According to Springer Nature, more than 70 % of researchers surveyed now view publisher guidance on AI as increasingly essential, a sentiment that underscores how deeply generative AI has become woven into academic workflows.
Key elements of the new framework include:
* Risk‑based assessment – The policy distinguishes between low‑risk applications, such as language polishing, data cleaning or structuring reviewer comments, and higher‑risk uses that could influence research interpretation, methodology selection or decision‑making. The latter require additional transparency, documentation and human oversight.

Harsh Jegadeesan, Chief Publishing Officer at Springer Nature, said the update “helps researchers use AI responsibly, transparently and with confidence.” Ellie Gendle, Head of Journals Policy, added that the guidance “provides a clear assessment and management approach to AI use, enabling academics to navigate the evolving landscape responsibly while protecting integrity and accountability.”
The framework is part of Springer Nature’s broader effort to address the ethical and practical challenges posed by generative AI. The publisher’s earlier principles—accountability, transparency, human oversight and confidentiality—remain in force, but the new framework offers a more detailed decision‑making process.
Industry observers note that the policy aligns with similar initiatives by other major publishers. A 2026 Nature Methods article highlighted the need for clear guidelines on AI in manuscript writing, peer review and publishing. The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, which entered into force in August 2024, also emphasizes transparency and risk assessment for high‑risk AI applications, underscoring the regulatory relevance of Springer Nature’s approach.
While the policy does not prescribe specific tools or technical standards, it signals a shift toward a more nuanced governance model.
