A 20‑year‑old man was arrested on Monday in Chatham County, Georgia, after police say he used artificial intelligence to create a fake delivery order and attempted to steal nearly $1,000 worth of merchandise from a Walmart on Ogeechee Road in Savannah.

The suspect, identified as Dieon Love, is charged with criminal attempt to commit a misdemeanor. Police said Love generated a fraudulent order that appeared to come from Walmart’s Spark Driver platform, which is used by customers to have items delivered to their homes. Love allegedly posed as a delivery driver and claimed the items were part of a legitimate order.

Chief Jeff Hadley of the Chatham County Police Department said this was the first time his department had encountered a theft involving AI. “It stuck out because of the AI component. I just had never heard that before and never seen that before,” he said.

According to police, Walmart employees told them that the incident may be part of a larger network of fake Spark orders used to obtain high‑end merchandise. Hadley said, “Through our conversations with the employees, there’s a larger network of the utilization of fake Spark orders to obtain high‑end merchandise from Walmart specifically. In the conversations with one of their special investigators who works for Walmart, you talk about millions of dollars that these Walmarts all across the country are getting scammed out of.”

The department has informed the FBI about the attempted theft. Walmart’s spokesperson said the company works to protect customers from fraudsters and will continue to work with law enforcement on these issues.

“We work hard to protect our customers from fraudsters, and to stay ahead of their changing tactics,” the spokesperson said. “We will continue to work with law enforcement on these issues.”

Hadley urged the public to remain vigilant against scams. “Just pay attention and educate yourself, because it is a fastly evolving, dynamic, in our world and in our country, and people need to educate themselves on it,” he said.
