In July 2026, MIT’s Schwarzman College of Computing transformed its Cambridge campus into a hub of interdisciplinary innovation, hosting a weeklong AI Educators Pilot that drew 19 faculty from universities across Greater Boston, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Texas.

The pilot was born from MIT’s own C01/C51 – Modeling with Machine Learning – a course created through the Common Ground initiative that teaches students how to apply foundational AI and machine‑learning techniques to real‑world problems. According to the College, the goal was to hand instructors a versatile toolkit that could be adapted for a range of classroom settings.

"We want to empower students to become critical thinkers about AI, not just users of the technology," said Dan Huttenlocher, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and the Panasonic Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Asu Ozdaglar, the college’s deputy dean of academics and head of EECS, added that the initiative was part of a broader effort to expand AI education by investing in instructor training.

The weeklong event was a collaborative effort that drew on leadership, staff, and more than half a dozen instructors from fields such as finance, computer science, and sustainability. Saurabh Amin, the Edmund K. Turner Professor in Civil Engineering and faculty director of the AI Educators Pilot, described the effort as unprecedented: "I have not seen an effort quite like it – this many dedicated instructors assembling materials of this richness, all to equip the educators who serve their students."

Participants included faculty from Allen University, Babson College, Brandeis University, Marshall University, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, the University of North Texas, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Working alongside MIT faculty, they explored the pedagogy behind Modeling with Machine Learning through demos, videos, and exercises, and collaborated on hands‑on activities that translated the course’s materials into their own curricula.

"This opportunity has been very timely because we are starting an AI and data science program in my department," said Wenjin Zhou, assistant professor of computer science at UMass Lowell. Zhou noted that the workshop helped him think about how to teach future computer scientists within an AI‑focused context and how to integrate AI into teaching.

A key theme of the workshop was moving beyond the black‑box perception of machine learning. Shen Shen, an EECS lecturer and one of the workshop instructors, emphasized that AI should be seen as a tool or a new framing for solving domain‑specific problems. Amin echoed this sentiment, noting that while high‑quality material exists, context is often missing. "What is scarce are educators prepared to teach AI as more than a fixed body of concepts and tools, to ground it in their own field, help students use it with judgment, and demystify it," he said.

At the end of the week, participants reflected on which workshop materials and teaching approaches they planned to adapt for their courses. Their feedback will inform future iterations of the pilot and support the development of a broader network of educators committed to expanding AI education across diverse learning environments.

Weijie Pang, assistant professor of computer science at Wentworth Institute of Technology, highlighted the value of community building: "This is a really valuable opportunity to communicate with other faculty from different majors and areas. I can see what other universities are doing and what we can learn from each other." Dylan Cashman, assistant professor of computer science at Brandeis University, added that the workshop helped him see that faculty across disciplines face similar questions about how to serve students as AI technology evolves.

The MIT AI Educators Pilot represents a concrete step toward the college’s mission of fostering interdisciplinary AI research and education. By equipping instructors with adaptable teaching resources and fostering collaboration across institutions, the program aims to broaden AI literacy and critical‑thinking skills among students nationwide.

As the pilot concludes, the College plans to refine its curriculum materials based on participant feedback and to expand the network of educators who can bring AI concepts into a wider array of courses. The initiative aligns with MIT’s broader strategy to promote responsible AI education and to prepare the next generation of scholars and practitioners for the growing role of AI in society.
